Problem:
Cultural sensitivity involves understanding different beliefs about values, norms, and practices, such as mental health, vaccinations, or other beliefs and values. Cultural competence goes beyond just awareness; it includes skills and knowledge necessary to effectively engage with diverse cultural backgrounds. A culturally competent, macro-practice social worker would apply their awareness of their own biases, knowledge of various cultural contexts-including historical, political, and social factors-and communication styles (Cho, 2025). Cancino & Nuñez (2023) noted that cultural sensitivity is a prerequisite for cultural competence, as it embodies empathy and respect for different cultures. Through cultural sensitivity training, teachers (and social workers) can be effectively prepared to enhance self-esteem, self-monitoring, open-mindedness, empathy, interaction involvement, and non-judgmental attitudes - all of which can improve classroom management and support (Boudouaia et al., 2022).
I believe that both are necessary for the needs of social work delivery. It is necessary to build cultural sensitivity about diverse cultural norms, values, and beliefs, which may help us to be effective social workers in actively engaging in cultural competence.
