Problem:

Summarize the following in a few simple sentences: a. Two reasons for organizational shortcomings with communities of color: i. There is no recognition of how power hierarchies embitter within relationships between different races (and other demographic categories). ii. There is lack of focus on how systems, organizations, cultures, and institutions pay a role in inequities. b. An OBM practitioner can address these problems by teaching organizational leaders about the power hierarchies that are embedded in relationships between individuals of different races. This may include education about privilege, historical laws and practices that have resulted in power and resource differences between groups of different races, and cumulative effects of inequitable organizational practices on communities of color. OBM practitioners should also work with organizational leaders to help them identify the inequities that exist within their organization and how the organizational practices are reinforcing these inequities. This can be done through analysis of staff data including demographics of staff at each level, comparison between applicants and who is hired, opportunities given to employees for personal and career advancement, and corrective action, to name a few.
