Please adhere to the guidelines for the research paper. Also, please use the Research Paper Outline Template to fill in the key elements of your research paper!

PART I:

Overview:

For the research paper, you will be required to write a well-organized investigative, persuasive paperon your current or intended major in which you are interested. You will be required to conduct an investigation using library research and web based inquiry. Also, you will complete field research on ONE of the following: observation, an interview or an analysis of a work site.

You will complete each of the following for the research paper: (1) an outline; (2) rough draft; (3) peer review activity; and a (4) final draft (5) oral presentation (due dates for each assignment will be announced during class).

Format:

Introduction: The introduction should include background information including a description of your current or intended major. Provide adequate and sufficient information regarding the concepts and principles that make up the foundation of the area of study. Consider why this major is significant.

Body Paragraphs: The body paragraphs should include a response tothe following and any additional relevant information (in-text citations required in the research paper):

• An investigation of the social, political and historical contexts of this major.

• What contributions to the larger society has it made already?What contributions to society might it make in the future?

• Since a major is intended to prepare students for specific types of careers, investigate the relationship between the college courses required in your major with the work people do in that field.

• How will the coursework be beneficial in an actual work setting?

• What careers do the people in this major typically go on to have?

Conclusion: Based on your research, draw conclusions that may assist others in understanding the field of study.

MLA format/Length Requirement:

The research paper length is a minimum of 5 pages. Use 12 font, Times New Roman, and do not forget to double-space.

Note: Please keep in mind that this is persuasive writing (MLA format), so use third person throughout the paper.

Library Research:

Library Registration: If you have not done so already, register with theTSU library as soon as possible in order to access online resources. Simply go to the circulation desk as soon as you enter into the library. You will need a TSU ID and a copy of your current schedule.

Sources: You are required to use sources such as peer reviewed journals, books, magazines, etc. You may use web-based resources; however, you must be careful when selecting information from the internet. We will discuss and utilize the CRAAP Test (checklist for evaluating sources).

• You must have a minimum of 5 sources for the research paper-3 sources must be from a peer reviewed journal, book, etc.

Works Cited Page: Since research is required, you must include a works cited page located at the end of the research paper. I will reiterate the proper format during the research paper discussion.

Note: Copying and pasting from the internet is plagiarism, and a grade of 0 will be assigned if you do not adhere to the guidelines for crediting sources!!!!!

Submission Guidelines:

Blackboard: Tuesday, November 29th (before your class meeting/research paper only).

In-Class: Bring a typed copy to class on Tuesday, November 29th

Oral Presentation: (all students must be present to present key elements of their research paper - 5-7 minutes per student).
