Fieldwork preparation report
As part of the field report, students are expected to undertake the following tasks:
1. Draw a simple map that visually illustrates the following
[note: this exercise is designed to help you familiarise with the location of key landmarks and the positioning of the airport, runways in relation to the field site. You will not be assessed on the artistic skills, rather you will be assessed on clarity and accuracy]:
- the three runways of Sydney airport ?
- the location of Air Services Australia's noise measurement depots (refer to ?Webtrack) ?
- the location of Sydenham Green ?
- major highways and roads ?
- a scale ?
- North ?
- other major landmarks that may help the viewer gain an appreciation of the likely ?distribution of noise
2. What are the key effects of aircraft noise? Briefly comment on the prevalence of the noise issue using global examples (provide references)
3. Identify at least four stakeholders in the Sydney airport noise issue (refer to Item 4 in the previous page), and briefly describe each stakeholder's role in managing and mitigating the negative impact of aircraft-noise
4. Provide an overview of the history of Sydenham Green and the severity of noise impact. Explain how the construction of Sydney's third runway led to Sydenham Green.
5. How does Hardin's ‘logic of the commons' help explain the situation at Sydenham Green? Provide examples of ‘mutual coercion' in this context.
6. Provide a list of references
