Question 4: A 6-month long experiment is conducted to test the effects of sugar on the development of dental cavities. 60 volunteers are separated into two groups of 30 each. Both groups are instructed to follow the same brushing and flossing routine for the length of the study, and are fed the same meals throughout. However, Group 1 is instructed to consume 1 bag of m&m's after lunch and 1 bag of skittles after dinner while Group 2 is instructed to consume no more than three post-meal sweets per week. All participants are tested at the start of the study for any existing cavities. All of the participants are cavity-free. After 6 months, all participants' teeth are screened for cavities. The average number of cavities for Group 1 is 2, and the average for Group 2 is 0.
