What are the barriers to getting help

Problem

I. A teenager in your life (hypothetically) recently confided in you that they feel very depressed. Assume you are not (yet) a clinical psychologist, so you can't offer specific treatment to them, but you can be a supportive adult in their life. What would you say to them? How could you support them?

II. Later, you found out that they had been feeling this way for over 9 months, but felt scared to talk about it. What are the barriers to getting help? What suggestions do you have to get teenagers talking more about depression in general? What is the best way for adults to make it "okay" for teenagers to ask them for help?
