Assignment 1: Discussion post (150-215 words) (No reference)
Chapter 17 and 18 discusses anxiety, ocd, depression, bipoloar and other mood disorders. Please share a professional experience that you have dealing with this topic. Explain the scenario/situation and its outcome? How would you deal with this? What valuable information would you tell a counselor in training here regarding this case?
Your responses should be well thought out and comprehensive and will be assessed based on your evidence of content knowledge and critical thought.
Respond to two students (30-65 words):
Student 1 A.S.: The most recent professional example would be helping a child with test anxiety. We recently had state testing and there were several children who were anxious about the test and about how they were going to do on the tests. One child in particular was so anxious that she started crying and had trouble catching her breath. I took out in to the hallway and was able to calm her down so she could take deep breaths. I reassured her that no matter what happened on the test, she is still loved and still valuable and worthy. We talked for a bit about her anxieties and a lot of them stemmed from her struggles in math and her worry that failing this test would mean that she could not move on to 5th grade. I pointed out how much she's improved her math grade over the last 9 weeks and how hard she's been working to understand the material. We said affirmations together and I continued to remind her that she is loved and so smart. She was able to breathe through her remaining anxiety when taking the test.
Student 2 A.A.: One professional experience I've had related to anxiety was working with a child who had been hospitalized after an asthma attack. During her time in the hospital, I noticed that she became increasingly anxious. At first, she seemed calm and was still adjusting to the new environment of the hospital room. Over time she started showing signs of restlessness, overstimulation, frustration, and worry. This experience helped me realize how anxiety can build over time, especially when there is uncertainty and a lack of control. She eventually started to internalize those feelings and shut down.
To support her, I focused on normalization and connection. I brought in one of her favorite card games, which helped create a more familiar and comfortable environment. As we played and talked, I made sure to validate her feelings, explain what was happening in a simple way, and give her choices whenever possible so she could feel a little more in control. This experience really showed me how important it is to pay attention not just to what a child is saying, but also how their behavior changes over time, since anxiety can show up gradually or in less obvious ways.
One important takeaway I would share with a counselor in training is that anxiety in children doesn't always look like what we expect. Instead of directly saying they feel anxious or sad, it may come out as irritability, withdrawal, or changes in behavior. Being present, intentional, and engaged really helps you understand what the child is going through. It's important to look at the whole picture. Assess for what's happening in their environment, how they're responding emotionally, and any changes in behavior. This gives insight in order to better understand their needs and how to support them.

View 13.3 in the mylab. You will choose one of those and write a 1 page reflection based on the question provided. Please clearly identify which section you will be reviewing as well as the question. It is recommended that you respond to the question in a word document and upload it here to canvas. You will not need to use the mylab component to input this information. These responses are expected to be specific, comprehensive, and evidence of critical thinking, as it relates to course content and clinical objectives, must be demonstrated. (Expected length= 1 page)
