Problem/Solution Research Paper Prompt

Purpose
Since the start of the semester, we have been working on honing skills you've cultivated from completing several carefully designed assignments. The purpose of this paper is to exhibit your understanding of concepts we have learned this semester: objective summary, critical analysis, responding to multiple sources, argumentation, applying MLA style, and researching. Everything we have learned up to this point has been to prepare you for this research paper, and to set the foundation for future academic and professional research you may do. In short, your final paper should make a proposal, defend that proposal by taking positions, select and integrate sources that defend and challenge your position, and develop an original persuasive argument using MLA style and documentation.

Consider the following questions before you begin writing:

? What, exactly, is the issue or controversy being researched? What is your stance on the  topic and why?

• What makes this issue local? Think about who this involves, where the issue is, and, possibly, when this is an issue.

• What is the problem you are seeking to solve? What makes it a problem?

? What practical suggestion do you have? What are you proposing to "fix" the problem? (Be sure that your answer is not just money and/or resources since this is a vague answer)

? Why will your proposal work? What evidence do you have? What will it look like in practice? How do you know? (Use evidence, not guesswork or assumptions)

? What background does your audience need to know to understand the complexity of the issue?

? How can you hook the audience?

? How will you support this argument (thesis) with evidence?

? How do these other perspectives interact with one another? How can you turn their arguments into a "conversation" in your research paper? How will you include counter- arguments and respond to them?

? What is the action you want your reader to take? What are the local consequences of  your proposal?

? What, if any, primary research do you need to do? (Interviews, surveys, etc.)

full Works Cited page at the end of the paper, which includes all the sources you ended up using in the paper. Do not include sources you did not use that were on your annotated bibliography. You also do not need annotations in your Works Cited. This should all be documented in correct MLA format. See the Purdue MLA OWL for help with MLA formatting.
