Was alex under interrogation when he confessed

Problem

I. Consider the following scenario. A judge issued an arrest warrant for Alex for burglary. Two officers went to Alex's house to arrest him on the warrant. The officers handcuffed Alex and put him in the back of their patrol car to be transported to the jail for booking. The officers did not read Alex his Miranda warnings. On the way to jail, while the officers were talking to each other about the burglary, Alex interrupted them to confess.

II. Explain whether Alex's confession will be admissible at his burglary trial. In other words, was Alex under interrogation when he confessed?

III. Now consider this scenario. Max was arrested for murder, booked into jail, and taken to the homicide office to be interviewed by two detectives. Around 6 a.m., the detectives read Max his Miranda warnings, and he waived them. After several hours of questioning Max, the detectives had not made any progress and decided to take a break for lunch. Around 2 p.m., the detectives had Max brought back to jail, where they resumed questioning him without reading him his Miranda warnings again. This time, Max confessed to the murder.

IV. Explain whether Max's confession will be admissible at his murder trial. In other words, should the detectives have read Max his Miranda warnings before interrogating him the second time?
