Valid version of the cinderella story

Question: Read Angela Carter's Ashputtle or The Mother's Ghost and comment on her deconstruction of the story. Remember that Carter is our modern author and, among other things, tries to bring the horror and shock back into the tales.  We've been desensitized to Tolkien's "Mirror of scorn towards man" and Carter tries to clearly show us these images.

Comment on this version of Cinderella in your own way.  You may consider discussing whether or not this is a valid version of the Cinderella story, or is her deconstruction of the tale too farfetched?  Does Carter's version change how you see the Cinderella story?  Was she successful in turning back the "Mirror of Scorn"? Respond to what you found interesting in Carter's tale.
