Undertake a mapping exercise using google maps

You are asked to undertake a mapping exercise using Google Maps. Using the maps Engine’ function (https://mapsengine.google.com), you need to create your own digital mapping of a part of Brighton (United Kingdom). You may wish to choose a specific street or area.
Do not be too ambitious in scale, but make sure your area is big enough to complete the task.

On your map you should identify the location of:

. sites of surveillance (CCTV for instance, but there may well be others)

. sites where screens (of any kind) are displayed (remember, even bus stops have screens!)

You should include pictures of as some of these surveillance sites and screen sites where possible. Remember that you are unlikely to be able to take pictures in private buildings (especially banks and financial organisations). Be responsible in your picture-taking.

Use the pin function in Google maps to highlight sites.

The pin function allows you to add a title, a description and an image.

In order to add your images, you need to store them online. Flickr offers free photo hosting. So does photobucket.

Give your map a title.

Use the green ‘Share’ button in the top right-hand corner of your map to generate a URL. Remember to change the ‘who has access’ setting to ‘anyone with this link’. This URL should be copied and pasted into your written reflection.

You do not have to add the map as an attachment – but you can do if you wish.

The written component for this assignment should consist of a (500 word max.) reflection on the process of mapping your site. You might want to consider the following questions when writing this reflection:-

Were you surprised by any of your findings regarding surveillance or screens?

What have you learned through this assignment?

How might you relate this exercise to some of the themes addressed in the lecture on digital mapping?

Ensure all referencing is in Harvard format and a bibliography is included.
