Transformational Leadership and Knowledge Translation
Leadership styles are imperative to improve and increase organizational productivity and ensure desired patient outcomes. One leadership style highlighted by Al-Thawabiya et al. (2023) is transformational leadership. This article defines transformational leadership as a leadership style that fosters autonomy and responsibility among followers, enhancing their commitment and efficiency within an organization. It also inspires growth and actively supports the integration of evidence-based practice into providing patient care, ensuring that organizational goals are met. This leadership style is considered the best in healthcare, inspiring nursing staff to provide optimum services with improved morale and conviction. A study by Boamoh et al. (2018) argued that Transformational leadership is a relational leadership style in which the leader has gained the trust and respect of the followers and motivates them to achieve the organization's goal by doing more than is expected of them. This type of leader is an exemplary role model who can effectively communicate the organization's vision and provide a structurally empowering work environment that encourages employees to participate in the decision-making process, increasing critical thinking skills and developing skills and new knowledge. In the Article by Alluhaybi et al. (2023), they argue that transformational leadership style positively correlated with work engagement and significantly increased work engagement among healthcare professionals. It was discussed that nurse leaders who lead by sharing common visions and fostering trust, motivation, and collaboration within a team are considered engaging leaders. They promote quality care by improving patients' experiences and overall healthcare service satisfaction.
On the other hand, knowledge Translation is vital to healthcare as it fosters innovation, improves patient outcomes, and enhances team engagement. It works hand in hand with transformational leadership. Chan et al. (2023) argue that transformational nurse leaders are required for knowledge translation to be effective. Knowledge translation involves using evidence-based practice to improve healthcare and patient outcomes.
Example in practice
The nurse manager at the hospital, which is my current place of employment, has these leadership skills. She is an engaging, transformational leader who inspires and motivates staff to exceed expectations. She communicates a clear organizational vision for patient care, allows team members to voice their concerns, and gives feedback and input. For example, A weekly educational development huddle is held to educate staff. The most recent educational intervention was Surgical sight (SSI) prevention. During this session, evidence-based practice preventative measures that were recently implemented were discussed, and staff were given the opportunity to voice their concerns and make suggestions. The results from SSI prevention were also shared with the staff, and they were recognized for the improvement that occurred because of their dedication and devotion to preventing SSIs. Her approach enhanced team morale, improved patient outcomes, and increased job satisfaction among the nursing staff.
Practice impacted the workplace.
The transformational leadership skills that this manager processes are highly effective in achieving organizational goals and staff satisfaction. The staff are team-oriented and have a positive work ethic; the employees are motivated to provide exceptional patient care, which improves patient outcomes and reduces the possibility of medical error and SSI.
Conclusion:
Leadership is essential; individual leadership styles affect the staff's attitude toward tasks. A correlation exists between favorable patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and positive leadership styles. Transformational leadership and knowledge translation are essential nurse manager skills. Leadership style is critical in shaping the quality of nursing care in hospitals, ensuring patient safety, and promoting cost-effectiveness. Effective leadership fosters a structured, high-performing healthcare environment that enhances staff engagement and patient outcomes when aligned with a shared organizational vision, mission, governance, and empowerment.
