How leadership in the nursing field is essential

Assignment Task:

First Key insight

Leadership in the nursing field is essential to nurse performance. This includes providing quality, compassionate care and ensuring the patient's safety. One key insight that I obtained through my research is that nursing leaders are that the most effective leadership styles that have been proven to be beneficial to nursing practice are the servant leadership approach, transformational and transactional approach, paternalistic leadership practices, and entrepreneurial leadership. Leaders play a crucial role in the healthcare field regarding influence on nursing performance. (Alsadaan et al, 2023)

Second Key Insight

Nursing leadership styles are responsible for most nursing dynamics. For instance, job satisfaction, nurse retention rates, quality of care, and patient outcomes. The nurse's educational background, personality, and work environment also influence their nursing leadership style. Each type of nurse leader role can be valuable when utilized in the right setting. (Cummings et al, 2021) An interesting fact about Leadership is that targeted educational interventions are the most effective way to develop leadership qualities in nurses. This is the opposite of what we are taught growing up. Those Leaders are born, not made.

Personal Experience

In my personal experience, I have experienced leaders with different leadership styles within my time as a nurse. With my first RN job, my nursing leader did not embody the necessary leadership styles to retain staff. Within four months, she had over 24 nurses resign due to her lack of leadership behaviors, which include: autonomy, competencies, relatedness, individual nursing characteristics, relationships and support, and leadership styles/practices. (Alsadaan et al, 2023) In contrast, my most recent nursing leadership was a great influence in my career. She integrated every category that held the most impact on her team. She showed empathy and relatedness.  She gave us autonomy and made us feel competent in our roles. She also supported us and developed a relationship with each of us. Her leadership style was unmatched, and her skills as a leader made for a very positive workplace with successful metrics, job satisfaction, and nurse retention rates. I truly wish she were still my nursing leader today. (Broome & Marshall, 2021). Need Assignment Help?
