Transactional and transformational leadership styles represent two different ways that can be used by managers to impact their organization's overall performance. The transactional leadership style focuses on how a manager influences his/her followers using the exchange process. Followers expect a specific outcome from their efforts based upon the amount of effort they provide. The transactional leadership style also uses contingent rewards and/or corrective actions if those rewards are not earned. As Bass (1985) points out this style will work best when there is need for high levels of conformity, reliability and quality. In addition, since all organizations require some level of standardization in order to maintain consistency in processes and outcomes, then a transactional leadership style may be needed at times. However, it has limited potential for producing significant amounts of creative or innovative ideas or solutions.
