Trade and environment law

Assignment question: International trade interacts with environmental issues in a complex manner, often posing threat to the natural and human environment. Trade has also been considered to be an ally to environment if environmental and social costs are internalised and there are more distribution of economic benefits of trade. Recent decades have been punctuated by a shift in focus and an increasingly widespread recognition of the need for the integration of trade and environment.

Critically evaluate the issues, competing concepts and priorities involved in making trade and environment mutually supportive for achieving the objective of sustainable development.

Here's the question. I'm an international student who struggles with assignment question. I don't understand how to critically evaluate the issues. Where should I start? In introduction should be about a broad idea of international trade and international environmental law?

And what about competing concepts and priorities. What does the concepts get involve with? And what does the priorities of developed countries and developing countries. Hope you can help me.
