But is new technology really the issue, or is it something else?

A famous court case was decided in 1962 (I was in second grade) called Engle vs. Vitale. This was the court case that took prayer out of school. So, some people (like David Barton) would point to this event and say THAT caused the growth of societal dysfunction.

However, 2 things happened in 1961. The "pill" became commercially available, and also IBM introduced the electric typewriter. Up until that time, most secretaries WERE MEN!

But, women could type faster than men using the newer typewriters, and so for the first time, women began to flood white collar offices.

The sexual revolution was, at least in part, launched by these two technological advancements. The TV show, Mad Men, sort of depicts all of that.

But is new technology really the issue, or is it something else?
