The materials we have covered in this class have discussed elements of democracy and democratization in various ways. According to the materials, are there possible preconditions for democracy and/or factors that improve the chance for the consolidation of democracy? Are some contexts more or less favorable for the development of (transitions to and strengthening of) democracy? Which and how? Are there particular procedures or principles that make democracy possible or feasible? The material contains some different views on these questions, compare and contrast them. When you mention a concept or idea, elaborate on what that means.
Use ONLY the readings assigned for this class and discussions in class sessions; do NOT use outside resources or your otherwise attained knowledge as the point is to examine your familiarity with and understanding of the material we have covered. As you answer the question, you need to refer throughout specifically to the material from which your response comes. Your response should come from a number of materials and all of the readings and lectures provide some insights, while the readings from Weeks 4-6 will be especially helpful and offer the key elements to respond.
