the cranial nerves are composed of twelve pairs

The cranial nerves are composed of twelve pairs of nerves which emanate from the nervous tissue of brain. In order to reach their targets they should ultimately exit/enter the cranium through openings in skull. Thus, their name is derived from their association with the cranium. The function of cranial nerves is for the most part similar to spinal nerves, the nerves which are associated with the spinal cord.
