The bottom bar is made up of an aluminum bar and a steel

Problem

1 in. diameter, 20 in. length, steel and aluminum bars are fitted between rigid plates(" just touching") at 70 F. The bars are then heated from 70 F to 300 F.

1. Calculate the axial stress in each bar.

2.Calculate the change in diameter in each bar.

The bottom bar is made up of an aluminum bar and a steel bar, each 10 in. long placed in the parallel configuration at 70 F. That is also heated to 300 F.

1. Calculate the axial stress in each bar.

2. Calculate the change in diameter in each bar.

3. Calculate the new location of the interface - does it move left or right and how much?

For alum: CTE = 0.0000129 per deg F, E= 10.5E6 psi, poisson ratio= 0.3

For steel: CTE = 0.0000065 per deg F, E= 29.5E6 psi, poisson ratio = 0.3
