The unconditioned stimulus (US) was the sudden screech of tires and a car swerving into my lane, which naturally triggered fear. The unconditioned response (UR) was an intense surge of anxiety and a racing heart. Before this event, driving on highways was neutral; thus, highway driving functioned as the neutral stimulus (NS). According to classical conditioning principles, extinction occurs when the CS is presented without the US over time, weakening the learned association (Bouton, 2019). I would know extinction has occurred when I can drive on the highway without experiencing significant anxiety. However, if spontaneous recovery occurs, the fear response may briefly return after a period of non-exposure, indicating the association is suppressed rather than erased.
