Problem:
Theory and existing scholarly literature play a critical role in informing research findings by providing a conceptual foundation and guiding the interpretation of results. In my study on staff turnover and its impact on nursing home financial and operational performance, theoretical frameworks such as organizational support theory and leadership theory serve as lenses through which I analyze my data. These frameworks help explain how leadership practices and organizational support influence employee retention and organizational outcomes (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Additionally, existing literature offers context by identifying established relationships between turnover, cost implications, and quality of care, allowing me to compare my findings with prior research (Hayes et al., 2006).
While the literature review establishes expectations and informs the research design, it is important to remain open to findings that may not fully align with previous studies. Research should not be limited to confirming existing knowledge but should also allow for new insights to emerge. As Patton (2015) emphasizes, qualitative research requires openness to unexpected findings, as these may reveal deeper or previously unexplored dimensions of the phenomenon being studied. Similarly, Creswell and Poth (2018) note that findings may extend, contradict, or refine existing literature, which contributes to the advancement of knowledge. Therefore, while I anticipate some alignment between my results and the literature, I remain open to discrepancies. These differences can provide valuable contributions by highlighting contextual factors unique to nursing homes or identifying gaps in current research. Ultimately, integrating theory and literature with openness to new findings strengthens the rigor, relevance, and impact of the study.
