Structure, direction, and meaning to the research process

Problem:

Theory plays a central role in research because it provides structure, direction, and meaning to the research process. According to Babbie (2017), theory is a systematic explanation for patterns that we observe in social life and helps researchers move beyond merely describing what is happening to explaining why and how phenomena occur. Without theory, research risks becoming a collection of unrelated observations.  Burkholder et al. (2020) further emphasize that theoretical frameworks ground a study within existing knowledge and clarify underlying assumptions guiding the inquiry.

In the counseling profession, one influential theory is Person Centered Theory developed by Carl Rogers. Person Centered Therapy is a humanistic approach that emphasizes individuals' innate ability to grow and self direct when provided with supportive conditions (Yao, 2025). Rogers proposed that the core conditions necessary for therapeutic change are empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence. Empathy refers to deeply understanding the client's perspective; unconditional positive regard involves accepting the client without judgment; congruence means the therapist is genuine and transparent in the therapeutic relationship. Person Centered Theory views human beings as naturally oriented toward growth and capable of accessing inner resources for change in an accepting environment (Yao, 2025).

To accept or use Person Centered Theory, I must believe that human beings are fundamentally capable of growth and positive change and that individuals possess inner resources that can be accessed within a supportive relationship. Burkholder et al. (2020) note that all theories carry assumptions about human nature and reality, and Person Centered Theory assumes that people are not inherently flawed but are influenced by their environments and relationships. It also assumes that clients are the experts on their own experiences and that meaningful change occurs through a facilitative relational environment rather than through directive advice.

Epistemologically, Person Centered Theory aligns with a constructivist perspective, valuing subjective experience and recognizing that individuals construct meaning based on their lived experiences. Knowledge is developed through personal reflection and interaction rather than through objective measurement alone. Babbie (2017) describes how paradigms shape how researchers understand knowledge and truth, and the constructivist stance of this theory places importance on individual perspective. Ontologically, the theory reflects a humanistic worldview that assumes reality is experienced uniquely by each individual. De Vaus (2001) emphasizes that philosophical assumptions influence how we understand phenomena, and my worldview aligns with the belief that the therapeutic relationship and subjective experience are central to human change. I believe in the agency, dignity, and growth potential of individuals, making Person Centered Theory's epistemological and ontological assumptions consistent with my own philosophical orientation as a counselor.
