Yes, the stigma around mental illness in Asian families is seen as private and not discussed openly. There is the worry that mental illness can bring shame or loss of face to the family. It is encouraged not to speak about mental illness, or it is believed to not exist. For example, a family member is experiencing depression or anxiety, family members may tell them to "be stronger" or to "work harder". Many worry about how the community will view the family if someone is diagnosed with a mental illness. It can make the individual feel embarrassed or afraid.
In my experience, we are told that depression and anxiety are just excuses that mentally weak individuals use to get out of work. When my uncle started to experience depression, he would reach out to his siblings and his parents, but was not taken seriously. They had told him that it was not a "big deal" and that he should not tell anyone outside of the family about it. My uncle went several months with depression and began to show signs. He began to stay in bed all day, he no longer participated in social events, and started to withdraw from everyone. His family would excuse his recent behaviors as laziness. Eventually, my uncle could no longer continue, and he committed suicide. Only after his death did the family begins to change their views on mental illness. After my uncle's death, the community talked about how my uncle was just a "weak man" and that they felt bad for my grandparents for having a weak son.
