Problem:
Chapter: Have your family members or friends experienced stigma with mental illness disorders?
Hello everyone,
This one hit me close to home. Many of my friends, including myself, have experienced the stigma associated with mental illness disorder, and that disorder is PTSD. PTSD, which stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, is the result of experiencing a life-altering traumatic event. In the earlier years of the Global War on Terror (GWOT), I can always remember the stigma associated with PTSD coming home and how it was frowned upon because it was considered to be mentally weak, and you were considered a liability. This kind of thinking, which permeated the ranks, served as a barrier for many who required support and treatment (Elliott et al., 2018). The result of veterans not seeking treatment due to the stigma associated with PTSD can often lead to crimes, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation (Holliday et al., 2020). As time moved on, I watched many of them give in to their mental illness and have committed suicide, are incarcerated, or addicted and controlled by substances from years of self-medicating the illness. On the other side, I have witnessed another side of fiends, including myself, who ignored the stigmas related to PTSD and sought treatment for our mental illness. As I progressed in my career, I watched the thought process shift because it was now prevalent how much damage the stigma was causing amongst the veteran community. This shift showed me how important it is to break the stigma around mental illness, especially PTSD. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it is a step toward recovery and strength. As future nurses, we have a responsibility to support patients without judgment, encourage treatment, and help create an environment where individuals feel safe asking for help.
