State-building in developing countries

State-building in developing countries

How did the process of state-building in Western Europe differ from state-building in developing countries? In your answer, you may consider whether the difficulties of creating states are linked to difficulties of industrialization. Your answer should compare the arguments provided by Charles Tilly “War Making and State Making as Organized Crime” 1985 and “The Paradoxical Nature of State Making: The Violent Creation of Order” 1981 by Yousef Cohen. What do these readings in turn say about the criticisms of modernization theory provided by Alexander Gerschenkron in “Economic backwardness in Historical Perspective” 1966 and “Political Order in Changing Societies by Samuel Huntington 1968. This paper should identify and explain how the process of state-building differed between Western Europe and developing countries. This paper should outline the arguments made by Tilly and Cohen and also discusses the relevance of Tilly’s and Cohen’s argument for the critiques of modernization theory posed by Gerschenkron and Huntington.
