Senior vice-president of Strategy and Stakeholder Relations at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), Victoria Hubbell discusses how the organization significantly enhanced its employee engagement scoresfrom 52 percent to 91 percent. Hubbell describes how the organization, in a very methodical way, started focusing on employees and their needs. Overall, HOOPPs approach to enhancing employee engagement was to identify the business practices; incorporate better development, training, and learning opportunities; foster increased empowerment; and create decision making where it should be.

Four specific elements identified as the biggest driversof engagement at HOOPP are:

CultureHubbell describes HOOPP as having a culture of profound respect and collaboration and that people look forward to coming to work.
Work/life balanceAlthough its not always the perfect balance, work is regarded in a healthy way in order to avoid a toxic, frenzied approach.

Resilience trainingTo help people focus, make better decisions, and improve clarity and creativity during times of change, a corporate-wide program was launched starting with the CEO and his team.

Opportunities for interesting workHOOPP recognizes the importance of having work that is valued and that taps into employees intellect and creativity.
