The researchers for this study used a descriptive approach. The results of this study are based off of a sample population of 2098 new inmates from January 2017 to September 2023 at the Southern Italy Penitentiary. Due to the large and specific sample size, researchers most likely chose a descriptive approach to be able to conceptualize all of the data within three tables. Table one discusses the socio-demographic, clinical, and legal characteristics of inmates incarcerated pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic. Table two lists comparisons between suicidal intent and psychological distress measures in new inmates at risk of suicide. Lastly, table three has the statistics for binary logistic forward regression models on new inmates with suicide risk. The study primarily summarizes the data uses frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to describe participant characteristics and screening outcomes. There was also a in depth breakdown of the results as well as a discussion section, which helped digest the information.
