Roads in Hilly Areas:
(a) The alignment selected should attain the changes in elevation by adopting the ruling gradient to the maximum length. Limiting and exceptional gradients should be avoided as far as possible.
(b) Avoid deep cuttings, high embankments and costly tunnels.
(c) Areas prone to landslides and subsidences should be avoided.
(d) Areas liable to snow drift and avalanches should be avoided.
(e) Obligatory points such as bridges, passes and tunnels should be identified first and the alignment shall be selected to match with them.
(f) Sunny side of exposed hill is preferred.
(g) Hairpin bends should be avoided as far as possible. If unavoidable, they should be located on gentle hill slopes.
(h) The main object of a hill road is to gain elevation. Thus, alternate rise and fall should be avoided.
