The following traffic surveys are needed for preparing a good road project:
Classified Volume Counts
This survey is normally carried out for 7 days, 24 hours a day. The number of vehicles of different types is counted:

Light Commercial Vehicles/Agricultural Tractor 1.5
Buses 3
Heavy Commercial Vehicles 3
Multi-axled Vehicles 4.5

Cycle rickshaws 2.0
Bullock carts 6.0
Horse carts 4.0
The PCU factor (Passenger Car Unit) is the multiplying factor for each class of vehicle to express the traffic in PCUs per day.
