Mindset GPS
The G in GPS stands for Growth Mindset. You might have heard about a variation of this, but it's essentially the idea your skills and abilities can continue to be developed through a combination of smart work and hard work: using the right methods, having the right resources available, and having the dedication and support needed to push through difficulties. So for example, rather than thinking my being bad at math is an intrinsic quality, it's the belief that I can get better at math with the right tools, supports, strategies, and methods.
Does that mean that we're all going to be equally good at math? No. Importantly, it also doesn't discount the effect of inequality on your experience. But it's a tool you can use to help you navigate those challenges and inequities you might face on the way toward your goals.
Next is the P in GPS: developing and-more importantly-focusing on and expressing your purpose, in this case for returning to school or continuing your education at this particular moment in time. What is your goal? Why now and not earlier or later? And it's important that this be the purpose you define for yourself... not the one you think you should have or that your family or employer thinks you should have. If those overlap with your own reason for being here, that's great! But think of this as your personal reason for being here. Because that's what you'll return to when things get tough and you'd rather be binge watching your favorite television show.
And lastly is the S: Social Belonging. The first day of class isn't going to be like the first day of an in-person class, where you walk into a classroom and see the faces of the people you'll be working with for the next 7, 10, or 15 weeks. It'll be something like this, where you'll login and click a link to get started. So it's particularly important to work to make those connections that keep us going, help expose us to new ways of thinking, and make us realize we aren't alone. If you're coming back from school for the first time in decades? You aren't the only one. Had a hard time last time you were in school? You've got company. Seek out peers, professors, and SPS staff who wants to support you and help you remember you aren't alone in this endeavor.
