Stem cell research began in 1968, and since their discovery, stem cells have been used to study cellular and tissue development. Stem cell research allows scientists to study cells as they divide and become increasingly specialized making brain, bone, skin, and other tissue type. These studies could lead to understanding both normal and abnormal development of cells. Many serious medical conditions such as birth defects and diseases like Cancer, Diabetes, Aids, and Ebola are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation. Continued research and an improved understanding of genetics and cell development could lead to new advanced therapy options for these conditions.
