1. Have students research some more recent cases of prison health care issues. Should sex changes be covered? Heart surgeries? Kidney transplants? Have students speak in class of an extreme case they found and what they believe makes it an important case.
2. Have each student research a famous riot in American prison history and prepare a presentation for the class.
3. Have students research innovative ways that different corrections departments are handling pregnant inmates who give birth in prison. Should these women be allowed to keep their babies with them in prison?
4. Have students research an important case which received media attention and determine what punishment the offender should receive. Then, have students research a recent case where an inmate was paroled. Have the students discuss if this was the right decision and why.
5. Have students do a detailed report of sexual offenders within a ten-mile radius of your school. What do the results depict? Then have the students search near their homes as well. Are their results surprising?
