An infection I have gotten recently was a sinus infection and when I get a sinus infection it is worse than the flu sometimes. I have extremely bad allergies and when there is any type of smoke or wind my allergies flare up. In this particular time, it was very winy and that caused a lot of pollen and dust to be up in the air. I also slept with my window open a few times before I noticed my allergies acting up. Once I realized my allergies were flaring up I started taking a few medications that usually help. I put off going to the doctor to get antibiotics because I was very busy with work and life until it was too late. I finally went into the doctor when I had a 102 fever and felt like someone was sitting on my chest. I could have prevented it from getting into my chest if I went to the doctors earlier instead of putting it off, but instead it took 2 rounds of antibiotics to finally get over the sinus infection I had. By far the worst case I've ever had.
What it means by age related factors that affect the mechanism of defense is that once you get over a certain age it is harder for your body to heal from things especially infection. You are more prone to infection as well because your natural defense is less. Your body naturally declines the older you get and this affects your defense mechanism.
