Constructivism suggests that individuals interpret and act according to the conceptual meanings they have organized in their minds. Personal constructs are formed through experience and then are used later to interpret future experiences. Our personal constructs act as filters to perceiving the world and interactions around us. No two people have the same set of personal constructs.

The greater the number of personal constructs (distinctions) one possesses leads to greater cognitive differentiation, which in turn leads to an increased ability to see other's perspectives and leads to greater communication competence.
