Radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging.
A radar uses an antenna to transmit a series of electromagnetic waves or pulses, and an antenna (usually the same one) to detect electromagnetic signals that have been reflected off objects of interest.

The time delay between transmission and receiving the reflected signal gives information about the range of the reflector, and the
frequencies and polarisations present in the received signal gives more information about the position and the structure of the reflector.
Radar system operate in a wide variety of wavebands from wavelengths of 10s of metres to wavelengths of the order of 1 mm.
The details of radar operation are not importan for this course, but some appreciation of radar accuracies and their limitations is useful.
