Q. Determine the need for insulation?

Equipment and piping shall be insulated as required for heat conservation, process heat control and personnel protection.

The temperature used to determine the need for insulation and the thickness is the normal operating fluid temperature except when the piping or apparatus has internal insulation or refractory lining. In this case the temperature that determines insulation thickness is the metal temperature.

Insulation shall be provided for all instrument leads, instrument tubing, instrument bridles, plugs, thermowells, and all other directly connected instruments wherever there is a possibility of freezing.

Where insulation is required on the outside portions of piping, vessels, or equipment that extends through an exterior building wall or roof, the insulation shall not stop at the exterior of the building but shall be extended for 300 mm inside the building.

Piping operating above 60ºC and located within 150 mm of electrical conduit or Teck cable shall be insulated for a distance of 300 mm on either side of the conduit or Teck cable.
