Various types of group therapies play an extremely important role in the provision of psychological treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) [1]. Psychoeducational groups impart information regarding addiction, relapse prevention, coping skills, stress management, communication skills, and how drugs physically affect the brain. These types of groups are usually more formal and educational, teaching clients how to better understand their addiction and recovery process. In contrast, psychotherapeutic groups are more about emotional healing and interpersonal relationships, trauma, behavioral tendencies, and psychological issues associated with use. This includes cognitive-behavioral (CBT) groups, process groups, trauma-informed groups, motivational interviewing groups, and family therapy groups (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2025).
The new prescreening process for referrals may also vary depending on the recommended group therapy type. Although a complete assessment of the client in psychoeducational groups may not be necessary, determining readiness to learn, level of functioning, and stage in recovery is appropriate. Counselors screening clients for psychotherapeutic groups, on the other hand, need to obtain much more information in order to determine emotional stability; the presence of mental health diagnoses and trauma history; as well as motivation (Etkin & Moshier); readiness for group processing; and potential harm to self or others. Certain process-oriented therapy groups are intensive (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2020) and may not be suitable for someone new to severe psychosis, with active suicidal ideation, or untreated trauma symptoms, as examples.
The referral process would begin with an assessment of the client's needs, preferences, culture and goals for treatment and if no other service could fulfil those parameters a search for alternative treatments would take place. Discuss the nature of the referral, provide education on available services, and cultivate an empirical referral partnership to ensure continuity of care between the two providers. These could be primary roles for a counselor redeployed from one long-term facility or provider type to another. Ways to treat it in conjunction may involve MAT (medication-assisted treatment), stay-in rehabilitation, trauma-based or faith-based counseling, peer support programs, holistic therapies, and psychiatric health. Counselors must practice ethical referrals that are client-centered and compatible with the client's specific needs, while maintaining open communication with other providers when consent is given (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2025).
