Promoting professional growth by improving teacher practice


Problem:

In my small rural school, professional development is intentionally used to promote professional growth by improving teacher practice and strengthening student achievement. Rather than offering professional development that feels random or disconnected, our leadership team ensures it follows a structured planning process. As described in Table 9.1, the first step is to review existing practices. At the beginning of each school year, administrators and teacher leaders reflect on which professional development sessions were useful, and which were not. Professional development in our school is also guided by output data, which connects directly to the data types described in Table 9.2. Because we are a smaller school, our leadership team closely monitors state testing results, benchmark assessments, attendance, and discipline referrals. These data sets are often reviewed by grade level and subgroup, such as special education students and economically disadvantaged students, since our population includes many students who need targeted support. Once gaps are identified, our school sets specific improvement goals that align with the process outlined in Table 9.3. For example, after noticing that several ninth-grade students struggled to pass Algebra I, our professional development focused on strategies such as small-group remediation, differentiated instruction, and exit tickets to monitor daily learning.
