Promoting an understanding of systemic inequalities

Problem: First, to get his students to enter into dialogue on "race", he conducts a data collection exercise. This records responses where the concepts of race, class, gender, etc. are re biologically/genetically constructed, socially/politically constructed, or both. Then he offers in-class readings related to each concept that provides significant aspects of our lives that are socially, politically, and economically constructed. After all the data has been collected, he presents the findings to the class and allows a discussion to take place based on their answers. The insights gained from this analysis underscore the necessity for educators of all backgrounds to incorporate 'race talk' into their curricula, promoting an understanding of systemic inequalities and preparing students to engage thoughtfully with issues of race in an increasingly diverse society.
