In counseling clients who are engaged in romantic relationships, I would expect to see communication problems that are rooted in earlier developmental experiences. Rauer et al. (2013) found that romantic relationship patterns in young adulthood often have antecedents in childhood and adolescent relational experiences, including parenting quality and peer interactions. This tells me that communication struggles are rarely just about the present conflict they are often shaped by long-standing relational templates.
For example, a client who grew up in a high-conflict or emotionally distant home may struggle with either avoidance or heightened reactivity during disagreements. I might see patterns such as defensiveness, difficulty expressing vulnerability, poor conflict resolution skills, or an inability to clearly articulate needs. Some clients may shut down to avoid conflict, while others escalate quickly because they learned that intensity was the only way to be heard.
