Problem:
For this discussion question, I'd like to focus on a character that is close to me. Sometimes my son likes to watch Disney+ and one of his favorite movies to watch is Moana. So, for this discussion question, I'd like to focus on Moana. I've seen that movie too many times that I know most of all the songs, especially the Thank You song with Moana and Maui lol This will specifically work with Moana, but I'm sure it could work with any other Disney movies main characters.
In existentialism philosophy, some of the specific questions in the philosophy existentialism are: Why am I here? What do I want from life? What gives my life purpose? And where is the source of meaning for me in life? More specifically, existentialism therapy and theory revolve around some concepts such as self-awareness, freedom, identity, and search for meaning.
In the movie, Moana is struggling with the different identities of becoming the new Chief of her family's village or exploring the ocean and bringing to the heart to Te Fiti. If Moana just stays in the village and becoming the new Chief, she meets the expectations of the others, especially her dad. However, Moana feels in herself that she wants more meaning in her life. She knows that she can do more than just becoming the chief. To find that meaning in her life, she must travel the ocean to bring the heart of Te Fiti. This gives her anxiety because their village has only stayed at their island.
We could call this normal anxiety vs neurotic anxiety since exploring the ocean is a powerful motivator to find her identity. In the end, she decides to go against the grain of the expectation of becoming the new Chief of the village and explore the ocean by transporting the heart to Te Fiti. By exploring the ocean, she attempts to answer those existential questions and by finding meaning in her life. After she brings the heart of the ocean to Te Fiti, Moana finds her new identity. She also found out the new meaning to her life.
