I think it is really important for clinical mental health counselors to understand the ethical and legal responsibilities that come with working with clients who have substance use disorders. These certifications help counselors develop competency in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and relapse prevention. These protections are important because many clients already experience shame or stigma related to addiction.
