Problem: Given a strip footing as shown in the figure. The footing is part of a building that is being renovated. The building load of 50 kips is shown on the figure. Construction required some staging to be attached to the foundation in order to facilitate the erection of other components. During construction, a crane operator accidentally hit the staging structure with his crane boom. Assuming that we can model the impacts as a 1 kip load in the z-direction, determine if the foundation fails. The strength of the concrete is 700 psi in tension and 8000 ksi. The modulus of elasticity of the foundation concrete is 5,000 ksi. Consider all normal and shear stresses created in the foundation by the loads to make your determination if the foundation is safe or unsafe. Document the assumptions that you make and the approach that you follow to solve this problem in such way that an engineer reviewing your calculations can follow the approach.
