Course Wrap-Up and Reflection Discussion

The Healthcare Policy and Delivery Systems course has broadly conceptualized how the advanced nursing practice interacts with healthcare policy and delivery systems. Over the eight weeks, I learned about the policy formulation process, the political and economic drivers behind the policies, and the direct effect of the policies on clinical decision making and patient outcomes. Among the important lessons learned was that healthcare policy is legislative and entails advocacy, equity, and leadership. This knowledge as a future Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) will enable me to not only deliver quality care but also to advocate for underserved populations and involve myself in health systems reforms (Anawade et al., 2024). I have learned that policy engagement is not an addition but a professional duty. This change of attitude has enabled me to view myself as a provider and a changer.

Another fundamental aspect of the course was a more profound knowledge of healthcare delivery systems and regulatory frameworks. Examining the systems, including program fee-for-service, value-based care, and accountable care organizations, enabled me to observe the interaction between reimbursement and the quality of care. In addition, discovering the purposes of the agencies like the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Joint Commission (TJC), and state Boards of Nursing made me even more grateful to the regulations and frameworks our practice is governed by (Anawade et al., 2024). Now I understand that all these agencies significantly impact clinical workflow, documentation, and patient safety programs. By being an APN, practicing in line with these expectations will guarantee compliance, quality, and accountability. This knowledge empowers me to maneuver around the complicated systems and provide ethically and financially viable care.

The utilization of the Middle Range Theories, especially between the academic knowledge and the actual practice of making decisions in a clinical atmosphere, has proven very useful. In contrast to grand theories, such as the Middle Range Theories, Pender Health Promotion Model, and Benner's Novice to Expert paradigm, they provide specifications on how actual clinical issues can be resolved. The theories improve my clinical judgment by encouraging me to take a holistic perspective of patient care: the emotional, spiritual, and social. They provide evidence-based interventions to facilitate standardizing care plans in different patient groups. These theories will help me design interventions that function according to patient values and goals and will ultimately enhance satisfaction and outcomes (Anawade et al., 2024). This knowledge of frameworks has changed my thinking about assessment, care planning, and outcome evaluation.

Mentorship in this course has played a very crucial role in my professional growth. There was also constant support, and healthy challenge by faculty members and more experienced peers that contributed to my growing confidence and critical thinking ability. The conversations and case analyses with mentors allowed me to draw lines between theoretical materials and actual nursing problems (Topp et al., 2021). With their help, I also had to consider my bias, gain cultural competence, and develop professional resilience. Because of this, I have developed more reflection in practice and deliberateness in my communication with patients and co-workers. The experience of being mentored reminded me of how crucial support networks are in academic and professional development. I feel more ready now to mentor others in the future to create a culture of collective learning and empowerment.

In conclusion, this course has transformed my vision of myself as an Advanced Practice Nurse as it has unified policy, theory, clinical systems, and mentorship into a single vision. I now understand that the positive nursing practice is not only about the individual interactions with the patients, but also about recognizing the systems, believing in the care, promoting changes, and using the theory to inform practice. Based on what I have learned in this course, I feel better equipped to be a leader, a collaborator, and an advocate of evidence-based policies and equal health care delivery. This experience has encouraged me to remain professionally active in professional development, policy-making, change, and interprofessional collaboration. The instruments that I have gained will make my practice more effective and enable me to play a significant role in transforming healthcare on a larger scale.
