Problem based on mathematical modelling approach

Mathematical Methods Assignment: Problem-solving and modelling task

Unit: Further calculus

Topic: Further differentiation and applications

Context - Tides are affected predominately by the gravitational force of the moon and vary based on the phases of the moon across each lunar month. Fishermen and vessel navigators amongst others rely on the accurate forecasting of the tidal information in each location around Australia and elsewhere to operate effectively. Complicated calculations and mathematical models are used in the forecasting to provide all users with reliable information for their constructive uses.

Task: Consider the height of Ocean Tides at one location in Australia over a period of at least 2 days. Find and collect the raw data of tide heights using for example the "Brisbane Bar Tide real time readings" and similar sources of other Australian locations.

Develop a mathematical function that models the heights of the tide for the time period you selected then produce a report that explains how you developed and refined your model to fit the data you collected. Use your model and other calculus methods to find when the tide is increasing and decreasing at its fastest rates. Generally It is essential that you use the approach to problem-solving and mathematical modelling provided. You must use different data from other students in your class and school. You will have four weeks to complete the assessment, including three hours of class time, during which your teacher will be available for consultation.

To complete this task you must -

1. Use the problem- solving and mathematical modelling approach to develop your response.

2. Respond with a range of understanding and skills, such as using mathematical language, appropriate calculations, tables of data, graphs and diagrams.

3. Provide a response that highlights the real-life applications of mathematics.

4. Respond using a written report format that can be read and interpreted independently of the instrument task sheet.

5. Develop a unique response

6. Use both analytic procedures and technology.
