Social workers have had a presence for a long time and have made many historical impacts on the community and on organizations. This work dates back to the 1800s with organizations such as the Association for the Improvement of the Condition of the Poor and the Children's Aid Society which focused on social issues within the community (Simmons University, 2014). Through the years there have been continued reform for social worker issues and advocacy for those who were experiencing poverty (Simmons University, 2014). The profession grew to incorporate the values it holds today such as social justice and service. Within the last 30 years a major change has been the shift towards a use of technology for many social work practices. While this increase use of technology has created a new way to streamline services, provide information, and find resources, this could also create a barrier and decrease the face to face aspect that social work used to have (Cawthorn, 2025). An example of this is the way that we document and bill for services, with the use of online systems, while they are great for storing, this could create a barrier and feelings of uncertainty when social workers document on their computer in front of clients. Or some services may require access to the internet which many people do not have. This shift occurred to keep up with the rise of technology and stay connected with resources, and to be able to provide the best services we can.
