Problem:
The history of social workers with community and organizational work started in the early 19th century with the Progressive Movement and Social Reform, starting with Jane Addams who was known to be the founder of the Settlement House movement as well as an advocate for the rights of child laborers (National Association of Social Workers, 2026) and Mary Richmond who advocated for the families of the underserved populations and establish educational institutions to train professional social workers. Hutchison & Charlesworth (2024) noted that other individuals like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Eugene Kinckle Jones, Dorothy Height, W. E. B. Du Bois, Frederick Douglass, and many other Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) social reform leaders made a positive impact on social reform.
In the last 30 years, a major shift in interventions, such as the use of evidence-based practices, strengths-based practices, and technological advances have improved to help agencies and programs assist individuals, families, and communities in reducing mental illness.
