Problem:
Case Study of Jorden
Jorden Davis is a 30-year-old bi-racial (African American and White) individual who identifies as female. She grew up in a neighborhood on the west side of Baltimore, surrounded by family and friends struggling with drug issues. Jorden did not have a close relationship with her parents. Her mother struggled with an addiction to cocaine and died from an overdose when Jorden was 10 years old. Her grandmother and various aunts primarily raised her. She started using marijuana and "popping pills" at the age of 13, and within the following decade, someone introduced her to cocaine and heroin. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and is embarrassed that she does not have a high school diploma. Jorden has a history of unstable housing. She lived with family and occasional boyfriends, and as she puts it, "I had no real home or belongings of my own."
Jorden has roamed from job to job, using most of her money to buy drugs. She has occasionally tried support groups, but they have not worked for her. She has felt severely depressed, trapped, and hopeless. Per Jorden, "I am really tired and scared, but I know I need help." Jorden is worried that maybe treatment won't work for her, but is tired of struggling with her current lifestyle. She thinks she may be ready to start working towards sobriety. Today, she has come into the local substance use treatment center to complete an intake and explore treatment options. You are the intake worker.
For this activity, you will need to provide examples of some of Motivational Interviewing's core skills, or OARS. These would be the type of skills you could use during Jorden's initial treatment session to explore Jorden's readiness for change and willingness to begin treatment. Need Assignment Help?
First, based on the information provided above, identify which Stage of Change (TTM) you believe Jorden is currently in and how this might impact her readiness to begin treatment.
Next, provide two different MI open-ended questions that you could use with Jorden to explore her readiness for change and/or her attitude towards starting treatment.
Create two different statements of affirmation you might use during Jorden's initial meeting based on information and insights gathered from the statement above
Create two reflections (one reflection of content and one reflection of feeling) that you could say to convey empathy.
Describe in at least one paragraph what you would say that could encourage Jorden to share her history and prior change efforts with you to promote collaborative partner
