From a person-centered perspective, Rick's behavior could be understood as reflecting incongruence between the person he presents to others and what he actually experiences internally. Rick acts as though relationships are meaningless and frequently uses sarcasm, alcohol, and intellectual superiority to avoid vulnerability. However, his actions often show that he deeply cares about Morty and the rest of his family. Rick may also have developed conditions of worth based on his intelligence and usefulness. He appears to believe that his value comes from being the smartest person in the room, solving impossible problems, and never needing anyone else. A person-centered therapist would not argue with Rick's beliefs, diagnose him, or tell him how he should change.
