3. Introduction and context description:
Cloud storage is very crucial in today’s world as the number of users is getting bigger and bigger by day, cloud computing is being used in today’s world, business industry, science and even entertainment. But there is always a concern regarding this type of storage, security a lot of people are afraid to use cloud storage because the internet is a scary place, even the word ‘cloud’ doesn’t sound safe. It sounds like anyone can go throw the vapour and take your personal things away.
In this project we will be creating our own personal network and our own hard drive without paying that much which it will be cost effective as there are usually monthly fees to pay for companies such as Drop box and one drive for their cloud storage services.
There are many benefit that will come with designing your own network as the user will have more control of his confidentially documents saved in their internet cloud software and there will be no third party looking at their documents because the user have full control and can choose who can look at these documents. Other advantages if business owners have their own network cloud they don’t need to accept other offers from other cloud storage companies provide for business owners which we still investigating wherever these services are secure or not. But there is always going be a problem maintaining these services and hardware as it need to be backed up regularly.
Whether your files are stored on ICloud, mega or Google drive, they could do more safety to prevent your confidential documents to be hacked, as any password can be hacked, there is no such thing as perfect security. Cloud storage companies should do more to protect the privacy of their users. It’s not impossible to make these storage ‘hack-proof’, but there’s a little more the user can do to protect their private confidential documents.
Naturally, these security features and services from the cloud storage companies come at a cost. And while is still demand for a security features and faster way for a customer to have access to their documents.
4. Evidence of requirements:
There will be some necessary requirements for me to carry out this investigation which will be portable hard drive, net media sharing device. There are up to 5 terabytes of hard drive which accessible for customers to purchase and there are different types and sizes which vary from one hard drive to another. As for my task I will be looking to get around 3 to 4 terabyte hard drive which I believe is appropriate to use for my project. For the net media sharing device I will be using the ‘Seagate STAK200 FreeAgentGoFlex Net Media Sharing Device’. This will be my sharing device that I intend to use as this feature will allow me get access my files from my networked PC. This Seagate also can handle up to two portable hard drives this is very significant if I’m running low on storage space
5. Problem definition:
This project will be setting up its own cloud network therefore I will need to know the accurate amount of hard drive that will be suitable to build the network device and if it will be using an appropriate amount that I will personally need. There are possible problems that could occur could be internet connectivity as I will need to have a high speed internet to upload and download usage to help rectify my personal needs when uploading or downloading, Another problem that the project could face is that the internet needs to be up and running all the time because I’m adding the cloud network to my personal router.
6. Aims:
This project is going be investigating and analysing the current and future security of the cloud storage and to compare the security features in cloud storage companies in the hope of finding which will become the future of storing personal documents on cloud securely. Also I will be creating my own personal cloud network which will also be compatible with android and IOS, also this project will investigate if building your own network is more logical than the use of other cloud services.
7. Objectives:
• Compare the performance of building own cloud storage or using the well-known companies such as Dropbox
• Carry out different circumstances to measure the performances of both private and public clouds.
• Study the disadvantages that may occur of building your own cloud storage.
• Assess if money is saved in the long run by using your own cloud storage networks
• Draw conclusion which cloud storage network will come out on top based on the results of our investigation?
8. Methods chosen for project implementation:
In this project there are few things I need to understand before I start my project for example what I’m expecting from the internet connections upload speed for the cloud storage system so by comparing different routers I can understand what is the best possible internet connection that I could use to upload speed for the cloud storage system.
9. Brief product description:
This project will be divided into different parts. First I need to decide the amount of hard drive that will be suitable for my project which if it’s not suitable then I will be looking at purchasing a more suitable high terabyte hard drive. Also I’m going to analyse and demonstrate the different between the private and public network and how it well be working on an IOS and Android.
10. Deliverables:
This project will help to understand wherever making a personal cloud network is more beneficial regarding security, fees and storage space than actually using the online cloud services such as Google drive where you have to pay a monthly subscription after a certain limit of space used by the customer for them to have a more amount of drive.
11. Outcome/product evaluation/testing approach:
When doing this project the intent is to make sure that the network server is able to work anywhere. By checking different locations I could conclude that the network is able to function in different places. Furthermore another main aim is to check and compare the performance of building both your own cloud storage or using the well-known companies such as Google drive and the project going study the disadvantages of using your own cloud storage and what problems could arise by building your own cloud storage. By Building your own cloud storage would the user have more storage space and no need to use other companies
12. Resources:
In this project we will be discussing the use of portable hard drive so I need to have Seagate GoFlex Net Media Sharing Device and know how to use it. Likewise I will need some wires to connect to the router such as ADSL. There are software that we will be using to complete this project so I need to have it installed on the computer that I’m using for this project. once I have installedPogo plug this software will guide me with a step by step of how to create an account for free and how to use it.
